MILAN – Angela Missoni is leaving the post of artistic director after 24 years at the Missoni fashion house founded by her parents, Ottavio and Rosita.
Missoni, 62, announced the move in an interview with Fashion company published Tuesday, indicating that the appointment of a new CEO during the pandemic and the role of a private equity fund in supporting the fashion house had given him “the confidence” to take the step.
Design director Alberto Caliri, who worked alongside Missoni for 15 years, will take on the role of designer on an interim basis. Its first collection will be presented in September, for spring 2022.
“My parents invented a new language in fashion,” Missoni told the publication. “And I think that over the past 25 years, I have been able to extend the lexicon of this language.”
Missoni will remain president of the family fashion house, while other family members will retain roles in the business, including her mother, who is in charge of the collection for the Missoni house.
The Missoni family retains majority control of the house, having sold a 41.2% stake to Italian investment fund FSI in 2018.
Other recent changes include the suspension of the M Missoni branch line in March. It was run by Angela Missoni’s daughter, Margherita Maccapani Missoni, who stepped down while her future was decided.
CEO Livio Proli told Women’s Wear Daily that the family supports their five-year plan to restructure the company after the impact of COVID-19[female[feminine . Missoni reported a net loss in 2020, with a 33% drop in revenue from € 110 million ($ 134 million) in 2019.
“Angela is showing sensitivity and courage as well as foresight with this decision, which will help kick off the company’s third cycle with a new injection of energy and creative force,” said Proli. “She will accompany the evolution of the brand, but she realized that she would have conditioned the company to stay” as Creative Director.
One of the goals is to reach younger customers, starting from the “extremely loyal customer base over 40,” he said.
Proli said the nearly 70-year-old brand needs to be “dusted off and made more relevant and cooler.” We want to offer elements of surprise in a more modern language without betraying Missoni’s roots.
