Cops: “stolen” car involved in accident | Venice Gondolier Sun
NORTH OF VENICE – A man from Nokomis allegedly struck another car, then fled and his mother reported the theft of the vehicle, authorities said.
Jeffery Palmer, 55, of Nokomis, was arrested Tuesday and charged with hit and run, false reporting and non-surrender.
The crash happened at Knights Trail and Discovery Way, as Palmer did not yield to oncoming traffic by turning left, authorities said.
Palmer was driving a pickup truck when he allegedly collided with a dump truck.
A witness saw the van leaving the crash towards Triple Diamond Boulevard where the vehicle was then located, according to the incident report.
Palmer was seen pulling the license plate out of the truck and running into a building.
According to reports, after Palmer’s arrest, officers were told the truck had been reported stolen by Palmer’s mother.
“She was reporting the vehicle as stolen because her son called her and told her to report it as stolen after destroying the car so as not to impact her auto insurance,” according to the incident report.
Palmer has been the subject of previous arrests, including driving with a suspended license, no driver’s license, drug possession and burglary.
The date of his arraignment is June 6.
