Iconic creamery of Boonville on AZ Food Tour
Mercer’s Dairy, the upstate New York ice cream maker made famous for its wine ice cream, has been named on Oneida County’s food tour list.
The ice cream company, located at 13584 State Route 12, Boonville, was chosen by community votes for its sweet, creamy, locally made ice cream.
The A-Z Food Tour features local restaurants on social media. All winners were determined by public vote.
This idea came from a virtual conference that Sarah Foster, Director of Tourism and Television / Cinema for Oneida County, attended. During the conference, Foster learned of a similar campaign coordinated for restaurants by a travel agency in Greenville, SC. Since the restaurant industry has been hit particularly hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, Foster thought, this would be an ideal way to encourage the general public to explore Oneida County restaurants and spotlight the Unique local food scene.
Oneida County Tourism took a different approach than Greenville in deciding which local dishes should be on the list. They asked the public to vote and conducted an open survey on their website where people could type in as many dishes as they wanted and what restaurants they came from. It was also a way of making sure the selection was fair. As an incentive, Oneida County Tourism held a contest where those who submitted an entry were automatically entered to win one of two $ 50 gift cards at the local restaurant of their choice. The competition received over 200 submissions.
“The community seemed so excited to be a part of this,” said Foster. “I think most people in the area have a tremendous sense of pride in our local food. This campaign is totally in there. People want to share their favorite food and favorite restaurants with others. “
The winning dishes and restaurants are featured in Instagram and Facebook posts. One to two letters are revealed each week, the full list should be online by the end of May. Upon completion of the rollout, the A-to-Z Food Tour guide will be available on the Oneida County website, www.oneidacountytourism.com, as a blog post. The Oneida County tourism team will also use the content to create an Instagram guide. You can see which other restaurants have been chosen by checking out the Instagram guide at https://www.instagram.com/ocnewyork/.
“The restaurants were all so elated when I tell them they’ve been chosen,” Foster said. “This campaign shows how loyal restaurant customers really are. Honestly, it has been heartwarming and a little touching with some restaurants.
Foster said one of the best things about the A-to-Z Food Tour is that it encourages locals to try new restaurants.
“We love to hear firsthand that our list inspires people to try something new,” said Foster. “A friend of mine sent me a screenshot of a conversation with her friend. He had sent her a picture of one of our messages (O’Baby’s) and asked if they could go to lunch there soon. I have also seen other people posting on Facebook that they were trying new places because of the A to Z Food Tour. It really makes me happy when people in the community come together to support our amazing and diverse restaurants. .
