Shanna Spickard, director of the college in Milan
The DeWitt School District has chosen its next superintendent.
Shanna Spickard is the principal of the Milan Middle School and has 24 years of experience in education.
“Honestly, it was a very difficult process,” said Craig Kahler, Chairman of the DeWitt School Board. “We ended up with three very good finalists for the position of superintendent. “
The school board chose Spickard on May 19. After the school board meeting next Monday to vote on Spickard’s contract, it will be official. Its start date will be July 1.
“We felt that Dr. Spickard had some of the characteristics that were of interest to the board. We thought it would be a perfect fit for the school district. She has a high energy level, I think she hit some key points for some of us regarding the review of our strategic plan, our vision. She has demonstrated great strengths in the area of diversity, equity and inclusion, ”said Kahler.
Spickard has been principal of Milan Middle School since 2015. She has said she will hopefully move into her new office in DeWitt as early as next weekend. His family have already chosen their new DeWitt home.
Kahler said during the interview process, the jury asked each candidate to prepare a plan for their first 90 days.
“If I remember correctly, a lot of that effort,” Kahler said of Spickard’s plan, “was largely,“ I want to get out. I want to spend my time getting to know the staff, getting to know the administrative staff, getting to know the board members, really learning and understanding. What is important to us. She arrives in the quiet neighborhood here.
Spickard said she was trying to hit the ground while running.
“Last week I was able to go to all the buildings before the kids go out for the summer and meet the administrators – they were able to introduce me to a number of staff and teachers and make part. a few classrooms… So that was really nice for me. It was a beautiful day, ”she said. “You know, we talk to our kids about filling people’s pails and obviously spending the day with all the kids and the staff really filled my pail.
He’s on Spickard’s list to contact the DeWitt community partnership around diversity, equity and inclusion.
“This is a pretty important topic for me so I look forward to continuing this work,” said Spickard.
When the DeWitt School District announced its search for a new superintendent, Sarah Reck, a member of the group’s community liaison and public relations advisory committee, said it was important to the school district that its next superintendent pursue the matter. work John Deiter started in 2016 after a racist incident at DeWitt Middle School.
“We need the new superintendent to be ready to work with us collaboratively on the issues that we see that are still in the school district,” Reck said.
Kahler echoed this sentiment.
“We really believe in the end that, as we discussed previously, we wanted someone who would be able to continue the work that Dr. Deiter has already started, and then take us to that next level. We really felt like she could be that candidate who could really do it, ”he said.
