‘We’re happy for Pirlo’ – proud Juventus Chiellini got ‘impossible result’ under freshman manager
The Turin giants avoided disaster by qualifying for the Champions League on the last day of the Serie A season.
Giorgio Chiellini has said Juventus players are happy for first-year coach Andrea Pirlo after qualifying for the Champions League on Sunday with a victory over Bologna. The veteran defender considers Pirlo’s job “not easy” and believes some of the criticisms leveled at the boss have been harsh.
The Bianconeri were on the verge of missing out on the top four before a three-game winning streak to close the campaign narrowly put them back in Europe’s premier competition. Chiellini admitted that a few weeks ago he thought a Champions League spot was an “unobtainable result” – which only added to the sense of satisfaction the team feels now.
However, it’s still unclear whether the end-of-season rescue job will be enough to keep Pirlo employed, with rumors the Turin club are already looking for potential replacements.
What was said?
“We are happy for the coach, it was his first season and it was not easy,” said Chiellini DAZN.
“We breathe a sigh of relief because two weeks ago, after the loss against Milan, I thought it was an impossible result.
“If we had had this commitment all season, we wouldn’t have been in this situation, we can’t have any regrets, Inter deserved to win the title.
“We have won two trophies this season and we can play in the Champions League in the next campaign. Today we played for two seasons. This one and a half of the next. “
Dramatic final day
Juventus needed help on Sunday and got it in the form of a draw between Napoli and Verona which pushed the Bianconeri to fourth place. Elsewhere, AC Milan knocked down Atalanta to finish second.
In addition to their Champions League qualification, Juventus also won a title from Coppa Italia in the home stretch of the season.
